Llanymynech is a village straddling the border between Montgomeryshire/Powys, Wales and Shropshire, England about 9 miles (14 km) north of the Welsh town of Welshpool. It was also a terminus of the now defunct Shropshire and Montgomeryshire Railway, which ran from 1866 to 1960.

The border actually passes right through the Lion Pub in the village, which has two bars in Shropshire and one in Montgomeryshire. The Lion is now closed. At one time Welsh counties were referred to as "Wet" or "Dry" depending on whether you could drink in pubs on Sundays. When Montgomeryshire was Dry it was legal to drink on Sundays in two bars of the Lion but not the other.

Llanymynech, which means "Church of the Monks" in English, is also home to Llanymynech Golf Club. Perched atop the nearby cliffs, the 18-hole course is unique in the UK for being in 2 different countries - on the 4th hole you tee-off in Wales and putt in England, staying in England for the 5th and 6th holes, before returning to Wales for the 7th tee. This is due to Offa's Dyke passing through the course.

Another claim to fame boasted by Llanymynech Golf Club is that it is the place where Ian Woosnam first learned to play golf.

The course was originally founded as a 9-hole course in 1933, and was later expanded to 18 holes.

Just to the north of the village is Pant. Further north is the English town of Oswestry.
